What is the Denmark Community Gardens?

The Denmark Community Gardens is an offshoot of the Denmark Community Cupboard.

Located behind Our Savior's Lutheran Church at 435 Wisconsin Ave, Denmark, WI, the Community Gardens has 18 raised wooden garden beds and an 1/8 acre field.  As of 2023, we are in our fourth year of operation, and are currently undergoing a major remodeling of our facilities to make it more durable, functionable, and more accessible to a wide range of people!

What do we plant?

Each year we plant a huge variety of vegetables.  In 2022, we planted cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, radishes, snap peas, beans, zucchini, green peppers, potatoes, lettuce, and more!  In 2023, we are hoping to add strawberries, and we have a small raspberry patch and a few fruit trees that we hope will begin to produce in the next few years!

Who receives the produce?

Most of our produce benefits the Denmark Community Cupboard.  If the harvesting of the vegetables lines up with our pantry delivery days (the 2nd Tuesday of every month), our fresh produce gets delivered with the rest of the month's groceries to ensure that our Cupboard recipients are receiving as much fresh, nutritional items as possible.  If the harvests don't line up--which happens quite often, thanks to our Wisconsin weather-- we send our produce to Ruby's Pantry or to our Maribel Pantry.  And when that still doesn't line up, we have four mini fridges just outside Our Savior's Lutheran Church that we fill up with our extra produce for anyone in the community to come and grab.  And in 2022, those refrigerators were full a lot!

How can you help?

Each year, our initial planting date is near the beginning of June.  In 2023, it will be June 11th, 2023, from 10:00-1:00!  After the planting day, we are always looking for help weeding, watering, and harvesting the gardens.  We will have signage at each of our garden beds on what to do, when to harvest the vegetables, and what to look for.  If you have free time, it's always a good time to stop by the Gardens!  If you aren't so sure about tending the Gardens by yourself, the Lead Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator will be there most Monday evenings at 4:30 and Thursday evenings at 6.
